Pakistan’s internet crisis has become a battleground of mismanagement, opaque communication, and lagging infrastructure projects. Pakistan’s internet crisis is a pressing concern, with the nation’s connectivity plagued by mismanagement, opaque communication, and outdated infrastructure projects. Delayed WhatsApp messages, slow VPN connections, and remote desktop delays have become the norm, compromising the digital lifeline of millions.

Shahzad Arshad, Chairman of the Wireless Internet Service Providers Association of Pakistan, emphasizes the urgent need for a comprehensive overhaul of the country’s infrastructure strategy. “We must move beyond short-term fixes and adopt a strategic approach to ensure the nation’s digital backbone is fortified,” he says. “Creating multi-gigabit connected Internet Exchange Points across all telecom regions is crucial to safeguarding the digital economy.”

The delayed activation of the PEACE cable and the stagnant progress on the China-Pakistan fiber link have only exacerbated the situation. The lack of clear timelines and the withholding of commencement for these projects has left the public and businesses in a state of uncertainty.

The government’s inadequate responses have further fueled frustration, with the Islamabad High Court deeming the official explanations unsatisfactory. Shahzad Arshad notes that the legal representatives from the government have dampened hopes by signaling that the current internet woes may persist longer than anticipated.

As a result, the business community, educators, and digital professionals are demanding a robust plan to mitigate future disruptions. The stakes are high, with freelancers, educational institutions, and traders dependent on uninterrupted digital connectivity.

The situation has sparked a critical dialogue about the sustainability and resilience of Pakistan’s internet infrastructure. As the world moves towards increasingly digital economies, Pakistan’s current state serves as a stark reminder of the need for forward-thinking policies and resilient technological frameworks. Without immediate and decisive action, the country risks deeper economic fallout and a prolonged digital divide.

The question now is whether the government and telecom authorities can rise to the occasion and fortify the nation’s digital backbone, or if Pakistan’s internet will remain ensnared in a web of inefficiency and delays. The future hinges on strategic action, transparency, and commitment.
