TCL just announced two new smartphones with its NextPaper display technology, aiming to reduce eye strain. The phones, 50 NxtPaper and 50 Pro NxtPaper, share more features than their names suggest.
For starters, they have the same 6.8-inch NxtPaper display with Full HD+ resolution and up to 120Hz refresh rate. The panel is 2.5D curved on the sides, with no space for a fingerprint sensor beneath the screen. Instead, the sensor is embedded in the power key.
There’s a punch-hole design for the 8-megapixel selfie camera on the 50, upgraded to 32 megapixels on the 50 Pro. Both phones share the same 108-megapixel main camera, 8-megapixel ultrawide camera, and 2-megapixel macro camera on the back.
Another difference lies in the storage: the 50 has 256 GB, while the 50 Pro comes with 512 GB. Both have a microSD slot, 8 GB RAM, and the Dimensity 6300 chipset by Mediatek with an octa-core CPU. Android 14 comes pre-installed, with TCL promising two years of OS updates and support until 2029 in the European Union.
TCL’s NxtPaper technology gives the screen the appearance of paper with reduced reflections. This iteration comes with a physical button that lets you toggle between Normal, Color Paper, and Max Ink modes. In Max Ink mode, the phone can be used to read for up to seven days or run in standby mode for up to 26 days, while also letting you select up to four apps to run uninterrupted.

The TCL 50 and 50 Pro NxtPaper 5G also feature a 5,010mAh battery with support for up to 33W charging. However, only the 50 Pro comes with a charger in the box. Available accessories include a flip case, T-Pen stylus, and a PC case, but the Pro exclusively receives the PC case.
TCL will release the 50 NxtPaper 5G in gray, blue, white, pink, and gold at a price of €229 in the European Union, while the 50 Pro NxtPaper 5G will be available in these colors in the European Union and LATAM regions at a price of €299.
