Samsung partnered with the University of Michigan to study the accuracy of its Galaxy Watches’ health features. The study found high correlations between the watch data and reference devices, including 90% accuracy for heart rate, 95% for body fat percentage and sweat loss, and 82% for VO2 max.

Last year, Samsung partnered with the University of Michigan’s Michigan Performance Research Laboratory (MiPR) to study and improve the accuracy of its Galaxy Watches’ health tracking features. The collaboration has now yielded promising results.

The MiPR studies found high correlation between the data reported by the Galaxy Watches and sport science reference devices when measuring heart rate, body fat percentage, sweat loss, and VO2 max. Here are the key findings:

* Heart rate: The study showed a 90% correlation with electrocardiogram equipment when running, indicating accurate tracking of heart rate.
* Body fat percentage: The watches demonstrated a 95% correlation with the standard diagnostic test of dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA).
* Sweat loss: The watches achieved 95% correlation when tested on distances ranging from 2.5km to 20km, providing reliable tracking of sweat loss.
* VO2 max: Compared to clinical-grade equipment, the watches showed an acceptable correlation of 82%, indicating accurate measurement of oxygen absorption during exercise.

These findings were presented alongside images illustrating the accuracy of the Galaxy Watch’s health tracking features.

The partnership’s co-director, Kenneth Kozloff, commented, “We are excited to continue our partnership with Samsung to ensure that innovations in wearable technology are accessible and accurate across all segments of the population. HPSSC and MiPR are eager to unveil these outstanding outcomes that solidify our commitment to enhancing heart rate and health monitoring and are looking forward to future collaborations.”
