Vodafone has announced the commercial launch of its 3G services in Europe. The first service to be rolled out is the Vodafone Mobile Connect 3G/GPRS datacard, a high-speed laptop datacard that offers data rates of up to 384kbps. This means Vodafone customers can access their usual office applications, such as email, calendar, and internet, at speeds up to ten times faster than GPRS. This allows customers with laptops to work remotely just as efficiently as they would in the office.
The Vodafone Mobile Connect 3G/GPRS datacard has already undergone successful customer trials across Europe, with thousands of business customers participating. The datacard will be available in Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, and the UK within the next four weeks.
Currently, Vodafone offers 3G coverage in major cities and an increasing number of transport routes. When users are outside of 3G network coverage, the datacard automatically switches to Vodafone’s GPRS network, providing continuous access to their normal office applications. Vodafone plans to continually expand its 3G coverage over the next few years.
In addition to the business service, Vodafone is also conducting customer trials of its consumer 3G service, which will enhance the Vodafone live! offering. Initial feedback from customers has been positive, and the company plans to introduce a consumer service in the next few months. Later in the year, an expanded range of 3G devices and services will become available.
