PTA Blocks Social Media, Websites Through Controversial Web Monitoring System

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has blocked 2,369 URLs and 183 mobile apps using its Web Monitoring System, which utilizes Deep Packet Inspection technology. The system allows the PTA to enforce blocking and censorship measures on a large scale, targeting content deemed harmful to state institutions and Pakistan’s interests.

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has launched its Web Monitoring System, restrictimg access to numerous websites, social media links, and mobile applications.

The system, which uses Deep Packet Inspection (DPI) technology, allows the PTA to control internet traffic at the gateway level and enforce blocking and censorship measures on a large scale. So far, the PTA has blocked 2,369 URLs and 183 mobile applications, primarily targeting those involved in exposing personal data and identity information.

The PTA has also begun blocking social media IDs and other online entities accused of promoting propaganda against state institutions and Pakistan’s interests.

The Cabinet Division Minister informs that the PTA regularly conducts public awareness campaigns to educate people on safe Internet usage through print media, SMS, and official social media accounts. Additionally, the government is reviewing the Personal Data Protection Bill to enhance data privacy and protection in the country.

The PTA has developed an online E-Portal for government organizations to lodge complaints instantly. Currently, 47 entities are using this system, which enables seamless and error-free tracking of concerns. For the public, the Complaint Management System (CMS) is available through PTA’s website, mobile app, and dedicated email service, offering multiple channels to report unlawful online content.

Upon receiving complaints, PTA internally analyzes the issues and collaborates with hosting entities like Apple Store and Google Play Store to remove or block unlawful applications in Pakistan.
