The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has conducted investigations into 21 complaints of data leakage, revealing that police officers from Balochistan, Punjab, and Sindh were involved in the sale of telecom consumers’ data. According to sources, these officers were selling a consumer’s data for Rs. 2,500 to Rs. 3,000 and earning up to Rs. 250,000 from the sale.
When caught, the officers claimed their accounts were compromised, but PTA has sent a notification to the Ministry of Interior detailing the data leaks and sales through law enforcement personnel. The authority has requested the ministry to revise its standard operating procedures (SOPs) to prevent such incidents in the future.
