Chinese phone makers are once again racing to unveil tri-folding phone concepts, with Huawei and Xiaomi preparing to announce their own iterations. Tecno has already jumped ahead with the Phantom Ultimate 2, a radical new design that boasts a screen that unfolds to an impressive 10 inches.
The Phantom Ultimate 2’s unfolded screen measures 10 inches, with a LTPO OLED display and a resolution of 1,620 x 2,880 pixels and a 4:3 aspect ratio. This expansive screen space blurs the lines between smartphones, small tablets, and full-sized tablets. The phone’s compact design is thanks to its use of TDDI technology, which combines the display driver and touch sensor onto a single chip, and a self-developed dual hinge mechanism that allows for a remarkably slim profile, measuring just 11 mm thick when folded. This hinge mechanism has been tested for 300,000 folds, ensuring durability.
The phone’s battery cover is also a key feature, measuring a mere 0.25mm and contributing to the sleek design. Screen hovering is also supported, adding to the device’s unique features. The dual-hinge design serves multiple purposes, including minimizing screen creases and enabling a slim profile. The phone can be partially folded into a laptop-like configuration, with the bottom half serving as a keyboard for note-taking, or positioned in “tent mode” for dual-screen video calls with live translation capabilities.
The Phantom Ultimate 2’s large 10-inch screen supports multi-window mode, allowing users to run three or more apps simultaneously. This feature provides a less restricted multitasking experience, taking full advantage of the large display. Although no release date has been announced, the Phantom Ultimate 2 offers an exciting glimpse into the future of foldable phone technology.
