The ongoing internet slowdown in Pakistan is attributed to faults in two of the seven international submarine cables connecting the country internationally. The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) made this announcement in a statement on Wednesday.

According to the statement, the fault in the SMW-4 submarine cable is expected to be repaired by early October 2024. Meanwhile, the AAE-1 submarine cable has already been repaired, which is expected to improve the internet experience.

Recently, PTA informed the Senate Standing Committee on IT and Telecom that VPNs were the cause of the overload on internet services in the country. Officials stated that one submarine cable was expected to be fixed by August 27, 2024, while another underwater cable was malfunctioning and will now be fixed by October 2024.
