Apple announced that iOS 18 will be released on September 16, ahead of the new iPhone 16’s release on September 20. The update will include features like Writing Tools, movie creation, and AI-powered search, with Siri getting a redesign and ability to answer thousands of questions.
Apple has announced that iOS 18 will be released on September 16, just one week before the launch of the new iPhone 16 series. The update will be available to all supported iPhones and will come preinstalled on the new iPhone 16 models, which will be released on September 20.
However, Apple Intelligence (AI) will not be part of the initial iOS 18 release. Instead, the first batch of AI features will arrive in October as part of iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, and macOS Sequoia 15.1. The initial features will only be available in US English, but an expansion to localized English in other countries is promised for December. Next year, Chinese, French, Japanese, and Spanish will also be supported.
The AI features arriving in October include Writing Tools, which creates movies based on descriptions in the Memories feature in Photos, as well as the ability to search for specific photos and moments in videos using natural language. Other features include Clean Up, which removes objects or people from photos, and summarized notifications. Siri will also be redesigned to support typing and will be more “natural” and “flexible”, allowing it to answer thousands of questions about Apple device features and settings.
Later this year and in the months following, Apple Intelligence will introduce new features such as Image Playground, which generates images and emoji, and Image Wand, which generates images from sketches. Siri will also use personal context to deliver tailored intelligence and will be able to take hundreds of new actions in and across Apple and third-party apps. Additionally, ChatGPT will be integrated into the platform.
Apple Intelligence will only be available on the newly launched iPhone 16 family, iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and iPads and Macs with M1 or later chips.
