Sony may not launch new Xperia 5 model this year

Sony has reportedly decided to discontinue the Xperia 5 series, opting to continue selling the Xperia 5 V from last year instead. This move is allegedly due to a change in consumer buying habits, with many users upgrading to the Xperia 1 VI rather than the 5 series.

Sony has left fans of small flagships waiting for the Xperia 5 VI, but it seems that the model may have been axed. According to a recent press conference, Sony will not release a new Xperia 5 series device this year.

Instead, the company plans to continue selling the Xperia 5 V from last year, a decision that reportedly applies to both domestic and global markets. The reason for this move is allegedly due to a change in consumers’ buying habits, with many Xperia 5 V users upgrading to the Xperia 1 VI compared to a relatively small number of 5-series users switching to the 1 V in the previous generation.

An image from Japanese publication K-Tai Watch appears to show the sales trend, with a large number of Xperia 1 VI buyers coming from the 5 V, and a smaller number of 5-series buyers switching to the 1 V.

It’s unclear what Sony’s marketing strategy for 2025 will be, but there is a possibility that the 5-series could make a comeback after some tuning up to better suit the new market demands. However, any such plans are currently only known internally.

We have reached out to Sony for comment and will update you when we hear anything. The source of this information is K-Tai Watch.
