Sony Unveils the PlayStation 5 Pro: A New Era in Graphics

Sony has unveiled the PlayStation 5 Pro, an updated version of its popular game console with enhanced graphics capabilities. This latest iteration aims to further improve the graphical fidelity of games, offering three key new improvements to achieve this goal.

At the core of the PS5 Pro is an upgraded GPU that features 67% more compute units and 28% faster memory. According to Sony, this updated architecture provides a 45% faster rendering of games compared to the original PS5.

Additionally, the PS5 Pro introduces hardware-accelerated ray tracing, allowing for smoother and more detailed rendering. The increased number of compute units also boosts ray tracing performance, casting rays at double or even triple the rate of the PS5 GPU.

Furthermore, Sony has developed a new AI-driven image upscaling solution called PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution. This technology utilizes AI and machine learning to upsample images to a higher resolution, providing sharper visuals without sacrificing performance. While this technology doesn’t generate frames like DLSS or XeSS, it should deliver superior image quality.

According to PlayStation lead architect Mark Cerny, the goal of the PS5 Pro was to make a performance-quality toggle redundant, allowing players to enjoy high-quality graphics at 60FPS without compromise. With native image upscaling and enhanced hardware, this seems achievable.

Native support for these new features will be limited to certain games, marked with the “PS5 Pro Enhanced” label. Additionally, the PS5 Pro comes with a Game Boost feature, which enhances over 8,500 PS4 titles, allowing for smoother gameplay and higher resolutions.

The PS5 Pro has only minor cosmetic changes compared to the standard PS5, with the main distinction being its increased height. The console is priced at $700, 56% more than the digital PS5, and will be available for purchase on November 7. Pre-orders start on September 26.
