Google Photos gets improved search and Gemini-powered Ask Photos

Google Photos improves search with everyday language, allowing users to search for specific photos using phrases like “Emma painting in the backyard”. Additionally, “Ask Photos” is now available, using Gemini AI to understand context and pull out relevant details to find specific memories.

Google Photos is getting a major upgrade to its search feature, allowing users to use more descriptive queries in everyday language. For example, you can search for “Emma painting in the backyard” and see the results in action in the video below.

The new search feature is currently rolling out in English to all users on Android and iOS, and will expand to more languages in the coming weeks. Users can sort the results by date or relevance to quickly find the specific image they’re looking for.

Some US users are also getting early access to Ask Photos, a feature that uses the power of Gemini AI to supercharge search. By understanding the context of your photo gallery, Ask Photos can pull out relevant details to help you find specific memories and uncover information about your life.

The video below shows how Ask Photos works, using the question “What did we eat at the hotel in Stanley?” as an example. Because Ask Photos is a conversational chatbot, you can give it extra clues or details if it doesn’t find what you’re looking for on the first try.

You can also ask Ask Photos to summarize the top things you did on a trip, or suggest the best photos from a specific event. All of this is made possible by the magic of Gemini models.

Google assures that humans may review your Ask Photos queries to improve the service, but only after being disconnected from your Google Account to protect your privacy. The answers Ask Photos gives you are not reviewed by humans, except in rare cases to address abuse or harm.
