The Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication (MoIT&T) has confirmed that Starlink, a prominent satellite broadband service provider, has yet to secure a necessary license to operate in Pakistan. The company, a subsidiary of SpaceX, had registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP) in December 2021 under the name “Starlink Internet Services Pakistan (Private) Ltd.”
According to a recent statement to the National Assembly of Pakistan, Starlink’s license approval has been delayed due to the company’s non-compliance with Pakistan’s technical and regulatory framework. The ministry has expressed concerns over potential interference between Geostationary Satellite Orbit (GSO) and Non-Geostationary Satellite Orbit (NGSO) systems, citing this as a significant factor in the delay.
Starlink has applied for a Long Distance and International (LDI) license with the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) since February 2022. Despite its registration, Starlink is not yet permitted to launch its services commercially due to an incomplete compliance with the necessary requirements.
